Tardigrades — barely half a millimetre of eight-legged, water-dwelling life — can dry out almost completely, endure radiation, and even ride out the vacuum of space, then plump back up and walk away once water returns.

A volcano on Mars nearly three Everests tall

Olympus Mons rises about 22 kilometres above the Martian plains — roughly two and a half times Everest's height above sea level. It spreads so wide that, standing on its flank, you'd see the summit curve away beneath the horizon.

Curtains of light where the Sun meets the sky

An aurora flares when particles streaming off the Sun crash into oxygen and nitrogen high overhead and set them glowing — green and red from oxygen, blue and violet from nitrogen. Earth's magnetic field steers the display toward the poles.

A chameleon shifts hue by rearranging tiny crystals in its skin that bend light differently — a tool as much for signalling mood and temperature as for hiding. Each eye also swivels on its own, giving it a near all-round view.

Raised from an ancient wreck off a Greek island, the Antikythera mechanism is a hand-cranked bronze device from the 2nd century BC. Its dozens of interlocking gears could predict the positions of the Sun and Moon and the timing of eclipses years ahead.
